Why give thanks

Nov 23, 2020

“I learn by going where I have to go,” Theodore Roethke wrote. And that’s an important concept. All of life cannot be planned. Our life is God’s and gratitude is its key.
Giving thanks to God is good psychologically to keep our thoughts light and full of energy. It is not true, psychologists tell us, that we think the way we feel. On the contrary, we feel the way we think, and thoughts can be changed.
Giving thanks to God is good spiritually. That is the beginning of contemplation.

2020 Joan Chittister Fund for Prisoners Appeal

Dear friends,

This, I hope, will be one of the stranger appeal letters you get from me.

I realize that the word on the streets is that nothing will ever be the same after the pandemic. And I suppose, at one level, that's true. But at another level it's not.

There will always be prisons, I'm sure. But, God willing, not prisons like these that are developing now. The overcrowding—the lack of any kind of controlled personal space, let alone “social distancing”—is totally out of control.

What's New

  • It’s not often that someone reads one of Joan Chittister’s books and is inspired to write one of their own. But that’s what happened to grandmother Dee Lorenz. The very active 87-year-old found herself curtailed by COVID-19 and remembered what she had read in Sister Joan’s book, The Gift of Years. “In it she says that we have an obligation to share what we know,” Lorenz said.

  • Joan Chittister’s thoughts on humility in the Rule of Benedict are shared in this letter to the editor from John Brooks that appeared in The Republic, Columbus, Indiana. Click here.

  • A column by Jane Jayroe Gamble in The Oklahoman newspaper on the topic of “forgiveness following the national election” referenced a quote by Joan Chittister from her book, The Gift of YearsThe Oklahoman is the largest daily newspaper in Oklahoma and is the only regional daily that covers the Greater Oklahoma City area.

About Joan

An outspoken advocate of justice, peace and equality

Joan Chittister, a Benedictine Sister of Erie, has dedicated her life to voicing questions that test popularly accepted truths of the day. Her questions to both church and society focus on the empowerment of women, the development of contemporary spirituality, a redefinition and renewal of Benedictine life for seekers today, and justice for the oppressed and marginalized, particularly those in prison.
